The Division 2A semifinal Football matchups could not be any more different. Concord-Carlisle and Masconomet tangle at Cawley Stadium in Lowell coming off winner-take-all Thanksgiving Day showdowns. C-C won the Dual County Small with a 25-7 victory against Bedford, and the Chieftains claimed the Cape Ann Large by doubling up North Andover, 40-20. When Duxbury and Marshfield meet at Weymouth High, they will be getting back together after Duxbury won the 25th Thanksgiving meeting, 17-7.
Both semifinal games are Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.
The Patriots and Chieftains each come in averaging more than 28 points per game, while the Rams and Green Dragons have both surrendered just 121 points for the season.
Masconomet (9-2) has one of the most dynamic combinations in the state with quarterback Chris Splinter and running back Evan Bunker. Bunker led Div. 2A with 159 points to go with 20 touchdowns while also serving as the place kicker. Splinter figured in 29 touchdowns overall, scoring 17 (16 rushing) and throwing for a dozen. The tandem figured in on all six touchdowns Thursday with Splinter rushing for three and throwing one to Bunker, who also ran in a pair.
The Patriots defense, led by linebacker Andy Mangan, also will have to contend with the Chieftains' Wildcat attack that features Bunker at quarterback. Unlike many schools using the formation, Bunker is a threat to go long to Splinter.
C-C (8-3) is playing in the postseason for the first time since 1978 after winning its first league title since tying for the top spot in '81. Led by running back Jaron Hargove (tied for the division lead with 24 touchdowns, including three Thursday), the Patriots are riding a seven-game winning streak that includes a 41-40 shootout against DCL Large champion Westford Academy.
No phone calls to coaches for tapes or reports are needed for Duxbury-Marshfield 2.
On Thanksgiving, it was apparent what worked and what didn't for each team. The passing attack of Duxbury (9-2) clicked with Kane Haffey and Matt O'Keefe each throwing touchdowns. Marshfield (7-3) struggled to move the ball and fumbled four times (losing two). Its lone score came via Jonathan Fraser's 95-yard interception return.
Both coaches openly admitted they kept the play book basic, saving their best stuff for Tuesday.
Neither team has a player with more than 10 touchdowns. Marshfield scored 19 TDs running out of a Wing-T set, with Sean Griffith leading the way with nine and Bob MacNeil and Matt DiGrigoli adding five apiece. Bob Murphy led Duxbury with eight TDs but missed the first half of the season with an injury.
