New England Patriots Strategy and Personnel 2009-12-08

New England Patriots Strategy and Personnel 2009-12-08PLAYER NOTES

--QB Tom Brady became the 31st player in NFL history to reach 30,000 passing yards. He entered the Miami game needing 268 yards to reach the milestone and went over the 30,000 mark on an 81-yard touchdown pass to WR Sam Aiken in the third quarter.

--WR Randy Moss reached 1,000 receiving yards for the 10th time in his career. Only Jerry Rice (14 seasons) has matched or exceeded Moss' feat. Moss entered the Miami game with 992 receiving yards and went over 1,000 yards on a 58-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.

--WR Wes Welker finished with 10 receptions for 167 yards. Welker had his fifth 10-plus reception game of the season. The NFL record for most 10-plus reception games in a season is seven, set by Houston's Andre Johnson in 2008.

--WR Sam Aiken scored on a career-long 81-yard reception in the third quarter. It marked his second NFL touchdown and first on American soil. Aiken's other NFL touchdown came on a 54-yard reception from Tom Brady in the Patriots' win over Tampa Bay in a game that was played in London.

--LB Tully Banta-Cain tied a career high when he combined on a sack with LB Jerod Mayo in the first quarter to push his 2009 total to 5.5 sacks. He also had 5.5 sacks in 2006.

REPORT CARD VS. DOLPHINS

PASSING OFFENSE: C -- This certainly wasn't Tom Brady's finest hour. The second of his two interceptions was crucial since it wiped out a strong drive that ended in the red zone. He relied heavily on Wes Welker, who caught 10 passes, but couldn't get much going to anyone else outside of two long touchdowns to Randy Moss and Sam Aiken.

RUSHING OFFENSE: C -- The Patriots had been running the ball well in recent weeks, but the offense hit a brick wall Sunday, particularly in the second half, and most of that stems from an inability to rush consistently. Laurence Maroney had just 41 yards on 13 carries, and Sammy Morris and Kevin Faulk were equally quiet.

PASS DEFENSE: D -- The total numbers aren't the problem; it's the fact Chad Henne threw the ball 52 times, the most since he was in college. No one fears this secondary, not even a journeyman such as Henne. Why should they? Henne completed 29 of his attempts for 335 yards and two touchdowns to go along with one interception.

RUSH DEFENSE: C -- What made Henne so effective was the constant threat of Ricky Williams, who finished with 75 yards on 11 carries. His numbers weren't eye-popping, but he had a handful of long gains and did enough to make New England's defense respect his ability to make big plays.

SPECIAL TEAMS: C-plus -- The Patriots continue to lack magic in the return game. On the flip side, they had some breakdowns in coverage on a Ted Ginn 51-yard return. Stephen Gostkowski never had the chance to attempt a field goal in a one-point game.

COACHING: C -- Once again, a questionable fourth-down call in which the Patriots passed up a field goal in an attempt to score a touchdown failed, and in a game decided by one point, that'll be a sore subject among armchair quarterbacks this week. On a similar note, someone has to take the blame for this team's inability to win on the road, or, at the very least, the coaching staff has to share the pie in bad times, too.
