The Colts couldn't stop Randy Moss, and the Patriots wide receiver finished with nine receptions for 179 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Sunday night's loss at Lucas Oil Stadium. Moss' yardage total was his second highest since becoming a Patriot and the fourth most yards in a game in his career. It was a different story, however, when the Patriots faced the Jets in Week 2. Moss, matched against cornerback Darrelle Revis, was held to four catches and 24 yards during a bad day for New England's offense.
But after the 16-9 loss at the Meadowlands, Moss wasn't exactly doling out praise Revis' way.
"All week, he was talking about being a shutdown corner," Moss said then," but there are no shutdown corners in the league because they have help most of the game. I probably could be a shutdown corner if I had (safety Brandon) Meriweather over the top for the whole game. I think I could be a corner. You have to give credit where credit was due."
This week, Revis insisted that he played Moss man-to-man.
"Everybody saw the game," Revis said. "Everybody knows I was in man coverage. Everybody knows that was the case. (Moss) is supposed to say that because that wasn't his day. He got shut out, and he was frustrated by it, which is cool. I don't have anything against him. I still think he's one of the best receivers in the league.
"When we go up against each other, it's great competition. If he says that, he does. But that's on him. But we play them twice a year. I have to see him just as much as he has to see me."
Moss, still one of the best receivers in the league, and Revis, regarded as one of the top corners, will meet again Sunday, this time on Moss' turf.
It's a highly anticipated matchup, and hey, what would a Patriots -Jets game be without a little controversy?
The Jets, who have lost five of six, desperately need a win. The Patriots , who blew the game in Indy, are loaded for bear.
Moss leads the NFL with 891 receiving yards. He has topped 100 receiving yards in three of the last four games. He's averaging 131 yards and has scored six of his seven touchdowns during that span. Quarterback Tom Brady has thrown his way 27 times in the last two games. Moss averaged 73 yards in New England's first five games.
"I think Randy Moss is the best vertical receiver in Football," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "He was going into our (first game against the Patriots ) as well."
Revis said the Patriots are putting Moss in more places to get him the ball.
"He's been in the slot a little bit more," Revis said, "so defensive backs can't get their hands on him. He can get a free release and sprint down the field and make acrobatic catches."
Revis, in his third NFL season, made the Pro Bowl last year. He has helped lead New York's third-ranked pass defense by quieting the Texans' Andre Johnson, the Saints' Marques Colston and the Bills' Terrell Owens.
"He doesn't have any weaknesses," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of Revis.
Belichick also noted that in the Week 2 matchup, the Jets "played a lot of over-the-top coverage with Revis and (safety Kerry) Rhodes. Not always, but quite a bit."
Revis stood by his statement: "I was in man-to-man coverage," he said.
In any case, Ryan thinks Revis is the best corner in Football.
"Darrelle Revis gives us an opportunity on defense to do what other defenses can't do, and that's to really get after it," Ryan said. "He's a special player. He doesn't back down from any challenge, and obviously Randy Moss is a huge challenge."
It's a challenge Revis is looking forward to.
"When you play against the best, you have to bring your game," Revis said. "You also have to give respect to the guys that you're going against. I mean, they get paid as well as I do. So there's no trying to get into a jarring match or a trash-talking match with Randy Moss. I say what I believe, and that's it. You live up to it, or you don't.
"Only thing I know is I'm giving him respect, he's one of their best, and it's great competition between me and him. I love it, and I'm sure he loves it, too."
